USS Thomas S. Gates (CG-51)
Commissioned August 22, 1987 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — the hometown of her namesake, Thomas Sovereign Gates, Jr., Secretary of Defense under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. One of the Navy’s most capable guided-missile cruisers, she served with distinction for nearly two decades before being decommissioned December 15, 2005.
